Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is chiropractic care, and how does it work?

Chiropractic care is a natural and non-invasive healthcare approach that focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. Chiropractors use hands-on and instrument assisted techniques to manipulate the spine and other joints, aiming to restore proper alignment and function. By doing so, chiropractic care helps alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance the brain’s ability to heal the body.

Because the body's innate recuperative powers are enhanced and integrated through the nervous system, correcting spinal abnormalities which irritate the nervous system can lead to a number of favorable results in patients suffering from various, seemingly non-spinal health conditions.

3. Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes, chiropractic treatment is safe when performed by a licensed and trained chiropractor. Chiropractors undergo extensive education and training to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care. They are well-versed in identifying any contraindications or specific conditions that might require modified treatment plans. As with all medical interventions, there are associated risks.

Stroke Risk: Some studies have suggested a possible association between neck manipulation and an increased risk of cervical artery dissection, which may lead to a stroke. However, the risk of stroke associated with chiropractic care is considered very low, and the overall occurrence of such events is rare.

Soreness and Discomfort: Following chiropractic adjustments, some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort. This is usually temporary and often resolves within a day or two. At Upper Oakville Chiropractic, our primary method of adjusting is with the use of the Activator instrument. This is a gentle, safe and effective method of adjusting.

Adverse Reactions: Some patients may experience adverse reactions to chiropractic care, such as headaches, dizziness, or fatigue. These reactions are usually minor and short-lived.

Pre-existing Conditions: It is essential to provide your chiropractor with a comprehensive health history to determine if chiropractic treatment is appropriate for you.

To minimize risks and ensure safe chiropractic care, it is essential to:

  • Choose a licensed and experienced chiropractor who has received proper training.

  • Disclose your complete medical history, including any pre-existing conditions

  • Be proactive in asking questions and understanding the proposed treatment plan.

  • If you experience any unusual or concerning symptoms after an adjustment, inform your chiropractor immediately.

4. What can I expect during my first chiropractic visit?

During your initial visit, the chiropractor will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, perform a physical examination, and may request diagnostic tests if necessary. Based on their findings, they will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

5. Does chiropractic care hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments are typically gentle and non-painful. Some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort following their first few adjustments as the body adapts, but this is generally temporary and often likened to the feeling after exercising.

6. How long will it take to see results from chiropractic care?

The timeframe for experiencing results varies depending on the individual, the condition being treated, and its severity. Regularity of visits and compliance with the treatment plan play a crucial role in obtaining the best outcome.

7. Is chiropractic care suitable for children and seniors?

Yes, chiropractic care is safe and beneficial for people of all ages, including children and seniors. Pediatric chiropractic care can address common childhood issues, such as ear infections, colic, and growth-related discomfort. For seniors, chiropractic care can improve mobility, balance, alleviate age-related pain, and enhance overall quality of life.

Dr Christink’s has safely treated patients between the ages of 5 weeks and 97 years.

 8. How often should I schedule chiropractic appointments?

The frequency of appointments depends on your specific condition, treatment plan, and how well your body responds to chiropractic care. In the beginning, you may need more frequent visits, which can then be gradually spaced out as you progress. Our chiropractor will recommend a schedule tailored to your needs.

9. Can chiropractic care be used alongside other medical treatments?

Chiropractic care is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments. Chiropractors collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure an integrated approach to your overall health and well-being.
